So what are the best steps to take when facing an imminent court date?
1. Assess How Serious the Situation Is

2. Find the Right Type of Lawyer

One very important factor is to make sure the lawyers you screen are capable of defending you. You may see “all purpose” lawyers that say they can do anything, but think of it in terms of construction: You wouldn’t hire a handyman to put in a new staircase, you want someone who has been doing that for years and years.
The same is true with your legal representation. You can’t afford taking a chance on a lawyer who may not know enough about case law to protect you.
3. Listen to Your Lawer
Once you’ve made your choice, it’s incredibly important to be 100% honest about the case with your lawyer, give them every detail you can think of, and then do what they say. Too many people think they can fool their lawyer and that will get them a good deal, but you need to remember that your lawyer works for you.
If you don’t tell them everything they may not be able to prepare an adequate defense, in which case, you lose.
